  • So probably not so much the GW this year...

Right before school started, I noticed a small hard lump in my neck, at about the midline, right under my chin.  I found it while putting on a scarf, because pressure on it hurt.

Now, last fall, my lower throat swelled, and after a series of blood test and given that it went down in a week, my doctor in Tulsa said Viral Thyroiditis, and that was then end of that diagnosis.

In the interim, I met a lady who went through thyroid cancer, and she had told me it started with a small, painful lump.  So....I freaked the hell out...

The campus health center got me in with surprising speed, and after two appointments (one to rule out a faulty thyroid), the internal medicine specialist said a) too high to be the thyroid, b) 95% sure its a thyroglossal duct cyst.  Apparently, its kinda unusual for it not to have presented before now, since it tends to happen in childhood.

One CT later (ack, ack, ack, I never want to do that again...contrast dye sucks), she and the radiologist both feel that's what we're looking at.  So I have an appointment on Wednesday with a local ear nose and throat specialist, and from what I can tell from lots and lots of research, I will be having surgery sometime in the next 5 weeks or so.

So probably no GW (because while my insurance should be paying on this, its a 80/20% split, so I am looking at probably $1500-2000 out of pocket for this, which puts a bit of a damper on big SCA travel plans.

I still definitely plan for Jubilee (if that doesn't happen because it takes that long to schedule the surgery, then I will send my dish to the cook's guild with someone else), and Cook's Symposium.  Clothiers may be out (I suspect they will want to do this thing in the next couple weeks, once I get pre-qualified for it.

    So yeah, fun times...

  • A note about eating out...

None of this really applies to most of the people who read this, but hey, tell your friends.

FYI, servers in restaurants...we DON'T make minimum wage.  We make $2.13/hour plus our tips (after we tip out the bar and the bus staff and sometimes the hostess).  Yes, it is legal for them to pay us this.

I understand that the economy blows, and money is tight for people.  But if you come in, and everyone at the table orders a $20+ steak dinner, and raves about the food and how nice I was, don't leave me a shit tip (13% or less).  This makes you look like a douche.  If you can't afford to tip your server and have the super keen entree, cook it yourself at home.

Relatedly, here's a shout out to Mr. and Mrs. M for New Jersey and their adorable child.  I appreciate the 20% tip and how lovely you were about everything tonight.  Tables like you are why I keep working in restaurants when I need something to do.

  • Inviting people to weigh in....

I am strongly (as in I have a good chunk of the application filled out) considering applying to graduate school for a masters in Higher Education Administration. The more I look at my wall of applications, the more I notice that over 50% are in higher ed, while maybe 20% are attorney positions. I loved working at NSU, and as much as it was the teaching, it was working with the students in an advisory role. I also realized the only reason I came back to law school the second year was because I got to be a Dean's Council mentor. Otherwise, I was all ready to quit. So...what does everyone think? University of Arkansas has rolling admissions, while OU and OSU admit in the fall. I am leaning towards U of A, based on their admissions requirements, Grad Assistant Packages, and what not.

About Me

  • The subtitle of this blog comes from the Jester Mysteries Series by Alan Gordon. They are awesomely done and I highly recommend them. I currently exist in a state of limbo between law school graduate / bar exam applicant and licensed/employed attorney. In the meantime, I am reading everything that isn't law related (lots of Medieval History and quirky non-fiction), waiting tables, and trying to figure out my life.
